Losing sleep because of someone's loud snoring snoring loudly is a running joke. We see it play out in commercials, in shows and movies, and in comics and plays: the fatigued and frazzled spouse, at their wit’s end because their partner won’t stop snoring.
The truth is, in that scenario, no one is happy. The snorer can’t control what they’re doing, and they’re actually not getting a great night’s sleep either. And anyone who shares a sleeping space with a snorer knows that trying to sleep during all that noise is no picnic. Sleep is important to our well-being and health, and it can be frustrating and upsetting when it’s disrupted. Long-term effects of sleep deprivation include fatigue, memory loss, concentration problems, and even medical issues.
Snoring can be attributed to many causes, but most frequently is due to a nasal obstruction, a malpositioned jaw, muscular weakness or excess fat in the throat. Sometimes, it may take a period of research and trial and error before the specific cause is found. However, all these issues can be solved with custom-fitted dental appliances, which push the jaw forward to clear the airway and stop the snoring. If you or a loved one snores, ask us at your next visit. We’d be happy to help you sleep better!
Sometimes, snoring is an indication of sleep apnea, a serious issue in which breathing is interrupted during sleep. Sleep apnea results in loud snoring and even oxygen deprivation, which can lead to many different medical issues including heart disease and stroke. Sleep apnea can be caused by different factors, such as obesity, smoking, and large adenoids, but can be treated effectively by means of a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. The patient sleeps wearing the CPAP mask, which delivers a prescribed level of air pressure into the airways in order to prevent them from collapsing. This solves both the breathing and the snoring issues at once. A safe and effective product, the CPAP machine is a great option for getting back those good night sleeps!
Snoring problems can be as individual as we are, but no matter your diagnosis, we’ll counsel you to the right treatment option so you - and everyone around you - can sleep easy!
